A few days ago I told you about the birds that had been affected by an oil spill at the Port of Brisbane.
Here is a wildlife officer about to release one of the pelicans back into its habitat after it had recovered from being covered by the oil. The wildlife people were able to release four birds but, sadly, one pelican and a cormorant died as a result of the oil contamination.
There is still one pelican that the wildlife officers cannot catch. He is being very elusive and keeps foiling their efforts to catch him. He is covered with oil and the situation is very serious.
As he tries to preen - to clean himself - he is eating some of the oil that is caked on his feathers. This will poison him and, if he doesn't get help soon, he may die too.
Let's hope that the wildlife officers can catch him and treat him before it is too late.
